Bridge course was conducted from 01.08.2022 to 13.08.2022 by professors of our English department with the help of Fr. Paulsamy. The purpose of the bridge course was explained to the students and a separate syllabus was framed. There were 90 students who attended the course. The syllabus was mainly categorized into three parts (i) Grammar (ii) Conversation/ storytelling (iii) Vocabulary .

On 17.09.2022, English department BELA Inauguration was held at our college on the theme “English for enrichment and careers”With Rev.Dr.Victor Antonyraj our Secratary and Rev.Fr.Paulsamy our Parish priest. The event began with the prayer song. It was followed by a welcome speech given by Michael Starwin, president of our department. Followed by lighting the lamp. Then there was a shawl and gift presentation to the invited guest. Then our head of the department Mrs. Geetha Mala read the object of our department. Then our honourable chief guest Dr. Sheyamala gave the Batches to the new leaders of our department. And our secretary congratulated them. After that pledge was read by our Ex President of our BELA. Followed by our department assistant professor Ms. Hetci introduces the chief guest. Then our honorary guest gave a wonderful and thoughtful speech to the audience. It was followed by formal vote of thanks given by Mr. Malaimani student of our department, and the event concluded.

BELA valedictory and A seminar on ‘The Impact of Indian Language in Indian Culture was organised by the Department of English on 20 th May 2022. Dr. Robin Stanly, Assistant Professor of English gave special address on culture of different states. Dr. Robin Stanly gave seminar on the Impact of English language in Indian culture.

INTER-DEPARTMENT GRAMMARIAN AWARD
The Department of English organized a GRAMMARIAN AWARD The Inter- Departmental competition was conducted for two days. Preliminary test was held on 28 th March and Finale was on29th March. Totally 50 teams were participated in the Preliminary among them 6 teams were selected for the final round with three phases each. Rev. Fr. Paulsamy SBD, Rev. Fr. Fabian SBD and Deacon Januaris SDB were the juries for this event. First price was bagged by Jimrics L and Sharon S from II BCA, Kaliraj V and Arun Ebinesh from Department of B.A Tamil secured the Second place.

Department of English organized an Industrial Visit to Arupe library of St. Joseph College, Trichy on 28 th May 2022. Final year undergraduate students and First year post graduate students took part in this event. Prof.Jeyapaul HoD, Department of English, St. Joseph College, Trichy, explained and guided the students. 38 Students participated in the I V. Students along with the professors experienced the theatrical show on Shakespeare’s ‘A Mid-Summer Night’s Dream.’ It was a fun filled and enlightened experience.

The Department of English conducted Parent Teachers Association Meeting for this Acadamic year from 04 th April 2022 to 12 th April 2022. The objective of this meeting to convey the parents about academic and non academic performances of their children. Its an opportunity for the parents to get to know their children and discuss with the professors on their growth. Student’s attendance and behavior were discussed with the parents.

Duration of the Course: 16.09.2021 - 30.09.2021 The Bridge Course for the first year students began on 16th September with the inauguration ceremony in the presence of our beloved Principal, Rev. Dr. Joseph Charles, our administrator and HOD of English, Rev. Fr. Thiviya Alexander, the Vice Principal for Arts Professor Prabhu, the Vice Principal for Sciences Professor Parvatha, the coordinator of the course and our Parish priest Rev. Fr. Paulsamy and the other staff members of the English department. The course was conducted for 12 days with a strength of 131 students. The students were divided into two groups. The first group of students were from BCA, BSC, BA Tamil and English and the second group of students were from B.com and BBA. The course was conducted in the first three hours (9.30 - 11.45) of college working time. These three hours were entirely handled by the staff members of English department. In the first hour the students were taught grammar such as tenses, auxiliaries, prepositions and the second hour conversation and storytelling and in the third hour they were taught the basic vocabularies which we use in our day today life.

The student representatives of the second and third years of BA English along with the Head of the Department organized the Fresher’s Day event for the UG and PG first year students and also the new faculty members of the department. The event was presided by the Secretary, the Principal, Head of the Department and Administrator and Rev. Fr. Paulsamy. MA Students were the MCs of the day. The Presidential address was delivered by Rev. Dr. Victor Antony Raj, the Secretary. The felicitation was given by Rev. Dr. Joseph Charles, the Principal. The welcoming note and introduction to the department was rendered by Rev. Fr. Thiviya Alexander, the HOD and Administrator. Students cited verses exclusively written about the new faculty members. Various cultural events like group dance, group singing, solo singing, games were conducted entertain the freshers. Special refreshments and mementos were provided and the event came to an end.

The inauguration of Bosco English Literary Association (BELA) and a seminar on the topic “Employment Opportunities in the realm of English Literature” was held on November 1 st , 2021. The event was presided over by Dr. Syed Ali Badhusha, the resource person and invited speaker. SEMINAR -2022 JOURNALISM AND MASS MEDIA IN CURRENT ERA
The Department of English organized a Seminar on the topic “JOURNALISM AND MASS MEDIA IN CURRENT ERA” on 20.04.2022. Ms.JENIFER M.A was the Resource Person, Anchor and News correspondent, Pudhiyathalaimurai TV. She captured the minds of the students by sharing her real life experience and was the real motivator too. She gave specific importance on the Citizen Journalism and its humanitarian approach. Students benefitted a lot from the seminar and paid much attention to it by their interaction with the resource person. It was an Inter- departmental seminar, with the total of 210 students registered with a fee of Rs.50 and they were awarded with participation certificate.

Students of the Department of English set out for Extension Activity, to the Government. Hr. Sec. School, Tharuvaikulam on 18.12.2021 at 10 am, from the college campus. Rev. Fr. Thiviya Alexander, Head of the Department blessed the occasion and gave instruction to the students. The students were accompanied by Rev. Fr. Thiviya Alexander, Head of the Department, and the faculties Prof. Rufus, Prof.Infant Sheba, Prof. Sudha, Prof. Masilla, Prof.Sujeetha and Prof. Melwin. The students reached the camp site at 11.30am and Mr. Anto, The Headmaster, Government Hr. Sec. School, Tharvaikulam gave a warm welcome to the students and professors. Students were divided into five groups. Our students prepared the syllabus and taught grammar to sixth and seventh standard students. Our department organized Christmas Celebration Program in a combined exchange Program with Government. Hr. Sec. School, Tharuvaikulam. English Literary Association was inaugurated by Rev. Fr. Thiviya Alexander also presided over the program as the Guest of Honour. Our students performed the dance, singing, skit and mime. They conducted fun games for the students of Government Hr. Sec. School, Tharuvaikulam. The rural camp filled the students with good memories and happiness. It was an enriching learning experience and gained confidence.

The Professors along with the students visited Government Higher Secondary, Taruvaikulam. and St. Xavier’s Higher Secondary School, Thoothukudi on 25 th March. The extension activity began with the common gathering with the respective Principals and with the approval of our College Permission letter. The very next day, our department students along with the Professors paid visit to St. Joseph’s Higher Secondary School, Keelamudimann, St. LaSalle’s Higher Secondary School, Thoothukudi and Mcvoy Higher Secondary School on 26 th March. The students were involved in Spoken English classes and Campus cleaning. Career Guidance was given for the XIIth students by the professors. Admission campaigning and pamphlets were issued to the students. Our students conducted fun games for the school students. The rural camp filled the students with good memories and happiness. It was an enriching learning experience and gained confidence.

Alumni Meeting for the department of English was conducted on 17 th January 2022 in Don Bosco College of Arts and Science, Keela Eral,Thoothukudi. The passed out students of English department attended this meeting. Rev. Fr. Thiviya Alexander, Head, Department of English welcomed the gathering. The students introduced themselves to the faculty members. The future plans and suggestions for the department were collected from staff and students. The students shared their memories. The staff members conducted the fun games for the alumni. Students’ present status and future plans were discussed in the meeting. The meeting was concluded by 12.30 pm with Lunch.

Department of English conducted Inter-Departmental Competitions named Grammarian Award on 15th and 16th of September 2019. Each department consists of three participants and totally 18 participants were participated. Bro. Navin and Ms. Mayer baby (Auxilium School) were invited as judges. Over all trophy was won by the Department of Mathematics, and Runner Trophy was won by the Department of English.
